I just installed xmonad 0.8 from source on a fresh ubuntu install (8.0.4.1) on my laptop (acer aspireone). I used the stock config file given on the xmonad gnome instructions.

The problem is that when the desktop environment loads, the notification area takes forever to load (2-3 minutes), but everything else is still quick. The only three things in it are the battery monitor, checkgmail, and the network manager. It's really a pain to have to wait so long to connect to the wireless network.

One thing I've noticed is that I open something else that uses the tray (skype, for example) before the other things load, it goes there right away.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks,
Ian

How are you starting Xmonad ?
What are you using for the system tray ?
How about your xmonad.hs or other configuration files ?

If you don't specify enough information people can't help you.
