While I don't have any videos with right-to-left arabic subtitles to test this myself, it might just work.
In VLC, Tools --> Preferences
Subtitles & OSD, Then try changing the default Language encoding to something more suitable.

Otherwise, perhaps SMPlayer (which is based on mplayer) may be better for you.

It doesn't like subtitles very much.

Oh this is rich. I installed this new version this morning. It worked fine at first, I was able to play a few movies without a hitch (although I absolutely hate the way you browse files in it). However, now when I tried to start it, it just wouldn't work. So I uninstalled vlc and vlx-nox, and then removed the repository. Then I reinstalled the old version of VLC and do you think it worked...? Nope. Now when I try to start vlc I get this message:

vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libvlc.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

qgtkstyle works extremely well, take a look at my previous post - it has a screenshot. I guess I'll post some of the other windows as well as some GNOME apps for comparison.

For me, VLC 0.9.2 looks great under GNOME.

It will use the KDE one for now, but it will appear as if it was written with Gtk+. It might be possible to get the GNOME native one after Qt 4.5 is out though but this has yet to be determined.

Really? The only one I noticed was that I could never get volume up to 100% on non Windows installs. Also if I fast forwarded too fast, the audio wouldn't work for a few seconds.

To clarify, there are qt libs, gtk libs, kde libs and gnome libs. You can have programs using gtk libs and no gnome libs, and qt programs using qt libs and no kde libs. Software using qt does not mean kde, same for software using gtk and gnome.

VLC 9 is using qt4, so the open file dialog reflects qt style file browsing.
