The preorder date for the Pandora is the 30th of September, the Pandora will start shipping
at the end of November.

The first batch will be limited to 3000 units worldwide. The next batch will be made in
2009.

Orders will be on a first come first served basis. If demand is too high we will start to
limit the orders to one Pandora per person, although any multiple orders recieved before
that would still be honoured.

The price is $329.99 / £199.99 (Inc VAT) / E249.99 (Inc VAT).

Anyone from anywhere in the world can order a Pandora, and we have special distribution
arrangements for USA, Canada, Spain, UK, Ireland, Germany & Turkey.

You can pay via US$, £GPB or Euro.

Spanish orders must be ordered via the UK but the shipping charge will be normal internal
Spanish rates, after this Hardcore Gamer will be the Spanish distributor.

We will also be setting up an affiliate system, we are offering a version for news sites and
a version for you, the regular customer, if you want to promote the Pandora to your friends.

If you run a news site please get in touch so we can work with you in advance on promotion.

As many of you know we have made the Pandora and done all the work on a tiny budget, so we
need your help to spread news and sell the Pandora, this is a system made by the users, we hope
it can be sold by you guys too.

If you run a news site please post news about the Pandora and the history behind it, join
our affiliate system so we can work together to promote it. There are no middle men with
this system, you will be speaking directly to us, we hope this is a unique situation and
will work out well.

Developers, Linux guys, hackers - we will be putting up everything you need to know over the
next month - join the dev forum at www.gp32x.com

That goes for everyone else too - if you want to ask something or get involved join us at the
forum - www.gp32x.com/board - but remember to read the FAQ first!

There will be another newsletter on the 30th with ordering information, but first we would
like to say thinks to you all for all your input, dedication to the project, ideas, arguments,
bitching, emails of support, news posts, help and everything else.

You can be sure we will look after all you preorder people in the best possible way and all of
you will be able to email or phone us directly - see you on the 30th!

Thanks,

Craig & the http://www.OpenPandora.org team.

PS you can email us on gp2xorders@gmail.com

Imho, that is a great price. I hope they stay in business with that deal.

DIGG to spread the word (http://digg.com/linux_unix/OpenPandora_preoders_start_Sept_30_3000_units_329_ 99) ;)

True but the release date & price is there.

Anyway, this little gadget looks really nice and I can see a lot of potential for it.

I would be very happy to have one of these for use with emulators (as seen in the youtube links) to play older c64/amiga/console/arcade games on.

I would never consider getting something like a PSP but the Pandora kicks the PSP butt!

If one can install skype, firefox, wine(to use a VoIP program I have installed through Wine in Linux that allows me to make and receive every single call for free within my provider's network) and pidgin into it then I'm all sold and I'll go after one of those babies XD :guitar:

Vadi

They showed off a Ubuntu 7.04 installed on it in one of the videos... so I'm quite confident you'll be able to do that.

Wine is a no-no as the Pandora is ARM, not x86. Skype is an unknown: it could be that the binary for the n810 can be used in the Pandora, or it might not :) The makers of Skype are unlikely to port to a platform as niche as the Pandora.

I am interested in buying one of these..

I want to know whether video playback is possible. Since ubuntu is working it should work? Does that mean i can access my network through WIFI (SAMBAS)?

Daveski
October 1st, 2008, 03:53 PM
Yes, the DSP for video decoding is said to be fast enough to decode full HD video streams and to rescale on the fly to display on the 800X480 screen.
Ubuntu might be a bit of overkill unless we get an optimised version, but yes, Samba should work on this device.

End of November I think. Do you mean the time of day?

Nah, I meant the month.

Does anyone know if it has USB ports ?

My wishlist would be..

Plug an external USB drive into it.
(My USB drives have images, music and films on them.)

Plug my camera into it, and transfer the images to SD card / USB drive.

Real basic image manipulation.

Real basic <html> editing using a text editor.

Sync my iPod (maybe using gtkPod).

Read all of my e-Books.

Basic web browsing eg collecting mail.

Maybe play some tunes through it using USB speakers.

Does anyone know if all / some of the above will be possible.

I'm not attached to the software I use for this, just the ability to do them would be enough for me.

It would make a wicked little device for carrying around when I travel.

Cheers in advance.

Actually, simple games (Doom / Quake) would be very cool whilst on the road too.

Mazza558

As far as I know, it can do all that (at least when the software is improved.)

The website claims they've sold 2000 in only 6 hours. I think the complete 3000 will be sold out really soon then. I already preordered mine yesterday.

Steveway

Well, wow, you guys killed our servers in a spectacular frenzy of preordering.

The forums are still dead at the time of writing. There is no doubt that once things calm down and everyone is able to place the final orders we will have sold out of the 3000.

We sold 2000 Pandoras in 6 hours even with the server totally besieged. Truly astonishing. Thank you all for supporting this project, all the emails, all the comments all, all the phone calls, all the news posts, everything.
That's pretty impressive I'm also glad I ordered yesterday, as it seems Craig is thinking about upping the first batch to 4000 units.

We are quickly looking in to if it is possible to increase our planned first batch to 4000 units.

We will update on this issue in around 48 hours.
Awesome, I'm glad it works out so well for them, they did a truly great job.

heh,

That what I was thinking, then I realised it would be a great travelling toy.

100 hours playing mp3's
http://pandorawiki.org/Pandora

DSLR pics put onto an external HDD via USB.

Reading all my e-books

Playing games and watching movies, maybe via the SVideo.

Oh and totally mobile internet and e-mail.

Bur my best reason..

It's my birthday soon, and NOBODY is going to buy me anything this cool. So I just had to buy it for myself.

*YAWN* Who woke up this thread! Grr :)

Wikipedia is a great source of information, but like any Encyclopaedia it is not great at up-to-date news and status updates.

According to the official website (http://www.open-pandora.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=98&Itemid=13&lang=en) the sample cases are arriving tomorrow, and mass production is blocked by this and final testing. The process has been slow, but the community have been well informed of progress, and shipping seems pretty imminent.

I have no idea if the Pandora console will be taking orders in time for Christmas (I have my doubts), but based on information so far it might well be available early next year...
