is there a program for ubuntu that will allow me to convert my cds to mp3 files?

I suppose you mean you would like to rip them onto your harddrive. It is a matter of personal preference I suppose, but I like 'grip' a lot. It is available in the ubuntu repositories (I believe).

I think sound juicer will do this. There was another post a couple of days ago. Search for Lame and soundjuicer.

i tried sound juicewr it converted the tracks into ogg vorbis and im getting an mp3 player that cant play ogg vorbis so im gonna try grip now

same with grip it converts to ogg

It converts to whatever you tell it to.
Try checking the settings and select a different encoder.

i did but none of the options that have mp3 in the name will work

You will, of course, have to install the encoder itself.
For mp3's, I believe lame will suffice.

Lame is good. You have to do this instead of it working out of the box as ubuntu would be sued if it distributed the mp3 codecs...
