I've tried installing Ubuntu several times on my faithful old Compaq Presario (c 2001), always with the same result: I get to 15% on the Installing System (detecting file systems ...) dialog when all disk and CD activity stops. I tried using both the noapic and nolapic switches, but the result was unchanged.

This PC has a 500 MHz processor, 384 MB of RAM, and a 20 GB IDE hard drive (wiped). The box worked fine under Windows 2000. All suggestions/help/hints are welcome!

Try using the alternate cd (http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/)

Thanks. I'm downloading it now.

just because it worked with an operating system that's eight years old, what makes you think it will work just as well with an operating system that's 6 months old?
