I am really 9.Fourth Grade.Most experienced computer kid on earth.(Or atleast I think so.(This is probably true.))
Now I probably will get banned for just faking that Age kind of thing.I mean all you half to do is pick some random age.

At first I did not know that Linux is just what Debian was built on, And Ubuntu was based on it.

Nice. My 10 year old brother uses Linux, but he makes me do everything for him (he can use Add/Remove and stuff like that, but nothing in the terminal). That shows that Linux is really ready for use by everyone, young old and in between (My mom's 47 and is happy with it, but I still do most things for her, but it was like that in Windows too, just more reformatting and virus cleaning :P)

Trust me kid, don't be impressed with adults. When you get older you'll learn new things, but you will discover that people's general personality stays the same. I was always annoyed in school because while my classmates were making fart jokes, I was interested in learning. That held true even in high school but it went from fart jokes to sex jokes. That's pretty much the only difference.

Being able to work with computers at age 9 is impressive from the stand point that you don't have as much experience, but the brain is perfectly able to learn and handle new information just as easily as an adult can and in some cases (language for example) better. Studies show that children can learn a second language faster than an adult.

Personally I think society is babying kids way too much. I'm not saying that we should go back to the pioneer days where they were getting married by puberty, I'm just saying that we should realize kids can be intelligent and mature. They just seem to lack direction. I've seen motivated kids who know as much about a topic as adults do. That's what we should be encouraging.

Good for you kid. Just realize that most people your age have the capability to learn independently (in this case about Linux). It's just that not many work for it like you have.

Well, I do.

However, the expectations of what you can do with a computer because of your age are biased both ways.

I am very old. I have read a lot of posts stating that Linux is not ready for Grandma or Grandpa to install, and configure. If that were really true, then I guess I wouldn't be posting here.

My recommendation is to keep learning new things.

When I grew up there were black-and-white TVs, airplanes rather than jets, we hadn't landed on the moon, we used typewriters because there were no home computers and the Internet hadn't been invented yet. There are so many things that I could add to this list but you probably wouldn't know what I was talking about.

To state it again, keep learning new things.

The future is a wonderful place when you are part of it rather than just an observer.

It's very nice that you can do this at age nine, but I don't think you really need to disclose your age. The beauty of the Internet is that you can disguise yourself as much as you like; I love feeling free to have people treat me with respect without age mattering.

Meeting people face-to-face, you can see people try to guess your age or even ask, which I think is phenomenally rude, and then these people decide how much respect you deserve. The same thing goes for clothes, or accents, or hair, or anything else that isn't nailed down.


By the way, when I was your age, I'd already changed Bill Gates' desktop background from behind a school network, and it was only a few weeks before that day I figured out that Linus Torvalds doesn't even have a desktop background.

Think about Gentoo forums. They allow all profanity, remarks of others if it isn't really bad, and they don't even acknowledge admins and mods as "high powered beings". They are so level with users that if a user is banned, the admin is under scrutiny until they can prove it.

Less control, but they show incredibly amazing organization and teamwork. Too much control... and well... you have people that lash back... and those who censor the arguments... ends up to be nasty and crazy, like a bazaar.

Wow! That would be a very nice teacher. Are teacher loves Frogs. See has a lot of frogs in the class room. She also has frog post notes, Frog Tissues, And A Frog to wipe off the computer's monitor. When I finished my work on the computer(Some basic math and reading) I flipped the screen so It was upside down. It isn't that hard. Well my old Desktop computer was making very weird noises. So I was searching for some OS and came with Linux. And I was thinking, "Where do I download it?" Than I found that Distros are based on Linux. And I somehow came up with Ubuntu out of some random searches at linux.com. And After that, My Laptop's Vista install crashed and it would not boot At All. I grabbed my Ubuntu Install CD and started using it. Than it took me a month for my WIFI card but I got it.

My Calculus teacher has a book of trig functions. Hundreds of pages of numbers that took years to create back in the 19th century (when it was written) - all rendered obsolete by today's $10 calculators from WalMart.

lol, i installed and switched between ubuntu and vista about 7 times before switching to ubuntu...... mostly wifi was a pain. Then a guide came out and bam!!....I cannot use anything other then ubuntu. I did a dual boot with vista just for itunes..... but .... killed that after a week or not using vista.... i just dont see what vista has that linux doesn't.... ohhh yea.... me playing with the system every 30sec... to either solve problems or to customize and create problems...lolz... kept me busy for years and years.

Hello. I am 18 and started using Ubuntu cold turkey in January :D I love it and it "just works" for me. No more of those damn viruses and user restrictions that I use to have on my XP machine. I am now in near complete control over my whole system which is nice for a change. I love going out and finding new things about linux. Just the other day I meet a guy at Taco Bell who uses Red Hat and who had a 5 min conversation on the subject. I mention linux at school and promote it via my laptop. I am always getting asked "What is that, a Mac?" But when I say that it is linux they always ask "what is that?". I just laugh and tell them that it is a FOSS OS and is an alternative the Mac and Windows allow with that it is fully customizable. They just look at me weird and start asking questions. Oh dear, there I went on rambling. Sorry. Also, nice to see some youngens on here for a change.

Hmm, so you're in grade 4 now? If you're 9, I'm guessing you were born in 1999, meaning I was in grade 4 the year you were born (I'm 19). Kind of interesting, If you're amused by such irrelevant things, like I tend to be.

When I was your age all I wanted to do on a computer was play video games like Lego Island, James Pond, Descent I/II, and Diablo. I hadn't even heard of Linux, and if I did, I definitely would have had no interest in it.

I don't think wine is a good idea for a school environment; it's too unreliable, and it's highly unlikely that anyone at the school will know how to troubleshoot it.

I'm probably wrong about what I said earlier, but I'd probably know how to use ubuntu and install apps, but just a year ago I was a beginner, now I consider myself a 6/10 on how advanced I am. Three years ago I didn't care about computers and that changed dramatically. I'm sure if you learn at a early age of about 5 how to use a computer and you're interested into it, by the age of 10 (using linux) you'd probably be pretty advanced at least for that age

Now to ask the OP something, did your parents bring you into linux and show you the ropes?

sadly, I don't get my first computer when I am like 10 or so. Now class can access much more information than we can back to the day. I remember back to the day, we used to have no internet. Windows is like the only OS we can get. (There are mac, but they are expensive, and even for people who has it, there is no software available) NO one in the town know have ever see Linux. Some people hear about it, and people have all kind of imagination about it. Every one is amaze on those 3D Games in computer store. Hard to believe, that is only 10-11 Years ago.

(I live at Macao at that time, right next to Hong Kong) The interesting thing is, FIOS are already available at that time at HK. People know about it, but no one use it, because it is way too expensive. haha.

I can't believe how much money they waste on tech every year! New versions of software with free alternatives, unnecessary hardware to replace working components, the list goes on! I mean, if they even switched from M$ Office to OO.org, they would save more than $5,000 easy!

Do you really think you can install Edubuntu on your school computers? Hmmm. Does your school have a student council or something? I'm doubting it. I'd give up on that idea.
I know I can install it. Every room has four computers+1 for the teacher. So I install one as a test, See if everything works and I could go through the install for each of them. It would take after school but I would REALLY want to get it done. And I might just find a learning program for Linux.

Well we use the computers for Math And Reading. Like one session in Math, And than the next one in Reading. Each Session usually takes 15 minutes. So 30 minutes on the computer. And One more thing:The teachers use a projector to show documents on the screen or videos. I wonder if this would be difficult to setup.

Well you may think after I say this I did not install Ubuntu,Configure It,And Compile everything I need.Hopefully you will still believe me.Now for the truth:
I am really 9.Fourth Grade.Most experienced computer kid on earth.(Or atleast I think so.(This is probably true.))

I think that most sites would do the fake age deal and ban you, but I have noticed that some forums are a little nicer to those who are young and at least attempting to speak civil rather than some people. Slow down there mate. Try using Arch, then progressing to Gentoo before you just dive into LFS. I'll be the first to say, it was extremely daunting task.

I'll put my opinion in here. Try Gentoo or Arch instead. Gentoo nags you 100000x less than Lunar and Source Mage do. (Installing, say, GNOME will run you about an hour in y/n questions) Furthur, Arch is a great OS to find your feet in the water of dependencies and package installation properties. This comes from the fact that you'll spend about 1/2 your time compiling packages over yaourt.

Hi! I'm 11, but I've been using Linux for quite a while (I don't know how long exactly, but since I found this $50 Gateway P4 junker at a yard sale about a year and a half ago.). Anything you need help with, ask! This forum's a fun place. But one question: where did you learn about Linux? It seems as though here at my school, they try to make you think that there is no such thing as an alternative (Like how they say you should use MS WORD and not a word prossessor, IE and not a web browser, etc, etc.) Keep in touch!

I started going online about the age of 11 as well, except I was using a 2400 baud modem dialing up BBS's. It took a lot more effort to get connected back then, and build up your "BBS lists" :) I guess its hard for younger generations to appreciate or relate to that when most internet connections are always on the minute someone boots up, or on their Cell phones :) As we speak I'm writing this from a train. We've come a long way in a very short time.

Can't help what those who are 11 today will think about 11 year olds ten - fifteen years from now, and reflect back on their learning experiences: "yeah, we used to have these things called Operating Systems" that were very segregated and kept us from communicating as fluidly as you kids can today."

Well, they're quite right -- IE is, since Winpuke 98, a desktop manager, while MS Word is a bit too much of everything for it's own good. (Though, I'll admit, it's a bit better with MS .doc file formats than OpenOffice and Abiword. At least on tables and the like.)

Man, 9 years old... when I was that age (23 now), Linux had just been born. I got stuck with DOS and Win 3.1. :( Not that the time period would've made much difference... with my dad's complete disinterest in anything other than "getting work killed and not having to think about anything else" in Windows, I doubt I'd have found out about Linux either way. Consider yourself very fortunate, niccholaspage.
