I am trying to offset my dependancy on firefox...so I am looking for an actual application that can work in ubuntu ... sit in the notification tray and alert me when mail hits any of my email accoutns be they webmail or regular mail.

Any such application?

One of the original applications to do this task was called biff. If you pull up synaptic & search for "biff" you'll find a whole slew of biff-alikes to choose from.

Doesn't quite fit the bill in terms of sitting in the notification tray but there is a mail notifier in the Screenlets package, gives you an icon on the desktop.

You could use "specto"

It is in the repos (although it is an older version)
and it checks pop3, imap and gmail (and websites,ports,...)

I hope this is what you are looking for!

I think the regular mail client "evolution" which comes with Gnome does this if you let it.

Yep. The mail notifaction plugin is enabled by default so you can usually just leave it minimised and it will notify when it finds new mail. It can also do sound notifications.

Is it doable to take a firefox plugin and turn it into a real program?
