View Full Version : Think your graphics card is hot? Think again...

After running the Unigine Island benchmark, which my 8600GT scored 8fps average @ 1440x900 resolution, I was sad. The benchmark has awesome graphics but my fps is so low!

If anyone wants to try their card, install phoronix test suite: http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/releases/repo/pts.debian/files/phoronix-test-suite_1.2.2_all.deb

And then paste this command in the terminal (PTS doesn't have a gui yet, will soon) to compare against my laptop:

phoronix-test-suite benchmark vadi-28416-17373-7833

Oh, and screenshots of the benchmark: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12835

I'm gonna run it on my Q6600, 512 MB 8600GTS, 2 GB RAM computer to see what happens!

Edit:
I got 8.36 FPS XD.

Antialiasing: 8x Anisotropic Filtering: 4x both set from Nvidia control panel.
If I disable them:10.72 FPS

Crysis on High(XP) run like crap on this PC( worse than the benchmark). Crysis on medium runs quite well.

You were using better drivers than me: 173.14.12 That's cheatin! :p

See, I thought you were talking about temperature.

And you could have asked me any time. I would have told you that the 8600GT was a midrange card and therefore, not that hot. Granted, it's not a piece of crap either.

Just try the benchmark!

Oh and you can use Envy to get latest drivers. But they didnt really give me much of a performance improvement

85 degrees at idle is frickin' hot. My 8600 idles at 49 degrees AND it's passively cooled too.

Hmm... lots of people with 8600s here; the benchmark makes me want to buy a GTX260 or an HD4870 :-)

I must say the engine performs rather bad for the quality of the graphics, I was quite disappointed to be honest. Most modern games look a lot better AND peform 75-100% better.

I think the sunset in this demo is 100% better than the sun in Crysis. I would go so far as to say that this demo is very close to or even better in places than Crysis ;) Loved it.

If you want to see how hot your graphics card gets, run:

MONITOR=all phoronix-test-suite benchmark unigine-tropics

And at the end it will plot on a line graph how hot your system components got during testing :)
