This was emailed to me by some friends. Im a little grossed out now.:(
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why?

Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to "butter them up")!

Have you ever seen a show on Food Network called "Good Eats"?

The host (My hero, Alton Brown) once did a whole show about Butter, and before anyone dismisses what you post about butter vs. margarine, Alton basically said the same things.

For most of my life, I've been taught butter is bad, and margarine is better for you.

Bullpuckey! Gimme the good stuff any day!

My philosophy on food is to eat the things that are closest to how they exist in nature. The less modification, the better (combining and cooking don't count as real modification like additives and chemical processing do).

Then, eat a variety of things, all in moderation.

Ignore the FUD.

Pretty simple, tastes good, quite healthy.

Water is one molecule away from being hydrogen peroxide (rocket fuel), what's your point?

Which is better for your health?

Although many Americans are told margarine contains less saturated fat than butter, it is not exactly true it is healthier per se. As mentioned above, trans fat is used in the process of solidifying margarine to look like butter. If a margarine does contain high concentrations of trans fats, then it is actually worse than butter. This is because in addition to raising LDL ("bad cholesterol") like saturated fats, it actually lowers HDL ("good cholesterol"). An easy rule of thumb to judge healthiness of oils is simply the fluidity. Saturated fats are usually solid and bad for your health, while liquids are better. Margarine is better if liquid and unsolidified.

PS: flies eat ****, so I don't care they don't come close to my margarine !

Yes, exactly, even a single added atom can change its "abilities" drasticly.

I agree completely. But, uh... I'm kinda poor so I just eat whatever my mom buys. And once I can afford to move out (3 of my 4 years of my college life spent here... must... leave...) I'll be poor again and probably living off of ramen.

Very high in trans fatty acids.

I think that's only true of non-tub margarines. Becel is famous for being trans-fat free.

Now that's interesting.. I've always been eating butter instead of margarin, just because of the taste, and I've thought that I shouldn't do this because it's unhealthy..

After reading this I searched for some articles about margarin and trans-fatty acids and now it seems that I've actualy been smart to prefer real food, whatever everybody else has told to me :D

From this on, I won't even touch that white tasteless stuff, or even any margarin/butter mix..

It's interesting that I've never even thought about why flies don't touch margarin.. :o

Both butter and margarine is gross. Want proof? Take a spoonful of it and start chewing.

To smear fat all over your bread to grease it up and glue the cheese to it is a disgusting habbit. I do it too and eat all kinds of other junk as well but if I was picky about food then the bread lubricate would be the first to go.

Uhm, plastic is a molecule and so is water, caffeine and DNA. So EVERYTHING is one molecule away from being plastic or water or caffeine or DNA.

Example. CH2CH3OH -- good 'ol booze and CH3OH -- Paint thinner
