partitioning - no extended partition option?

I just installed Kubuntu. I wanted to create an extended partition and then logical partitions off of that extended partition. With the graphics partitioner that ubuntu/kubuntu uses i only had an option to create a new partition as logical. Is the extended partition created implicitly in the ubuntu partitioner?
