This is more for information if others are still having sound problems
I have Ubuntu Hardy and sound has never worked ( It may be an alsa problem)
motherboard = asus p5b-plus
Someone suggested I try OSS v4.1 and it works. I have rebuilt Hardy several times and then install OSS 4.1 to get sound

1. I too had no sound with an ASUS P5B. Internet searches revealed many people have had no sound with that board (Search the web and see). It has a factory defect, yet the hardware reviewers never said a word about that. I returned the board and now have an Intel D975XBX2.
2. My System:
Intel Core2Duo Processor 2.4GHz
Intel Motherboard D975XBX2
3. I loaded Hardy about a week ago and - no sound.
4. After many searches and tries - I have sound to
headphones and speakers (headphones or speakers).
My Settings (Systems, Preferences, Sound):
SOUND EVENTS STAC92XXAnalog
MUSIC AND MOVIES "
AUDIO CONFERENCING "
Sound Playback "
Sound Capture "
DEFAULT MIXER TRACKS "
Device: HDA INTEL (Alsa Mixer)
