just wanna share my experience on abiword/gnumeric.

i've been using openoffice ever since i've first installed linux (suse 9.0). it's been good, but i've always found it a bit slow and i only needed writer and calc for my studies.

today i've installed abiword-gnome and gnumeric (both part of "gnome-office") and i'm really pleased. they're both fast, and i haven't found any features missing so far. pdf export is under "print".

I would personally want to wait before AbiWord becomes included as the default. For very simple word processing needs, it is usually sufficient, and there are some things it does much better than ooword (tab and margin settings come immediately to mind, as well as overall speed), but basic autocorrect/autoformat and hyphenation functionalities are still uncomfortably lacking. Font handling is sometimes better and sometimes worse than ooword. It is a good alternative, but it doesn't make a great replacement quite yet.

While I haven't removed OOo, I have installed AbiWord and Gnumeric. I've used a Gnumeric spreadsheet for some time to keep track of my checking account, and I think OOo is a lttle "heavy" for such word processing needs as I have. Also, I've found the conversion between the Gnome apps and Microsft Office to be more than sufficient.

I guess Gnumeric is a great application. For my writing needs I prefer Kword from the Koffice suite, not that big deal but it suits my needs and I like the interface.

I addaed AbiWoprd & Gnumeric yesterday. OO is a great App, I use it in my office on the winmachines, but it surely is a bit too heavy to start up.
If I won't be doing any coding (OO is a great tool to code simple applications and use UNO) I prefer opening mjy documents with ABW & GNUMERIC.

But.. I haven't ditched OO ;)

Why start a new thread when I can dread one up from five years ago?

OpenOffice 3 is horrible. And the fact that AbiWord now handles docx by default makes OO useless. Maybe GoOO is usable--is it?

I mean, if you ALWAYS have open OO, then its bogged-down, bloated, slow-loading performance is no big deal I suppose (besides not being a native GTK app.). But otherwise I'll never look at it again.

Yeah, myself looking towards when Abiword matures more - for one I do need the .odt support perfect heh. It's a fine alternative for small stuff.

Everything else I do in Adobe Buzzword. Great design, MS & open format intercompatibility, allows collaborative editing. But it is also online-only.

You write code in a word processor?
How does that even work?
