Has anyone found any software packages that do the functions of Microsoft Systems Management Server? I found a couple by googling: OpenNMS (http://www.opennms.org) and M23 (http://m23.sourceforge.net/PostNuke-0.750/html/index.php?newlang=eng). OpenNMS looks well developed but I'm not sure the interface is what my supervisor is looking for. M23 doesn't look all that flashy (especially the website) but it looks like it has a great functionality.

We currently use Open Audit (http://www.open-audit.org) and there's a new version coming out in a couple of months that I've not yet read the details. I'm looking for something that will:

1. Tell us what we have (o/s)
2. Provide reports for each machine (as Open Audit already does)
3. Scan the network for licenses on each machine and notify us if it finds a machine that is not licensed or if we exceed the number of licenses allowed.
4. Something that can scan a 64-bit machine because my supervisor said Open Audit has a problem with 64-bit machines.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

the new version of m23 the OpenSource Linux software distribution and management system was released a few days ago. It has official support for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and Xubuntu 10.04 LTS now.

So it may be of interest for you

Short info about what you can do with m23:

m23 is a free software distribution system licensed under the GPL, that installs and administrates clients with, Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu. m23 is controlled via webbrowser. The installation of a new m23 client is done in only three steps and the integration of existing clients is possible, too. Group functions and mass tools make managing a vast number of clients comfortable. Client backup and server backup are included to avoid data loss. With the integrated virtualisation solution, m23 can create and manage virtual m23 clients, that are run on real m23 servers and m23 clients. Scripts and software packages (for installation on the clients) are created directly from the m23 webinterface.

For more information visit the project page at SourceForge: m23.sf.net

PS. We are searching for testers of the LTS target plattforms. If you are interested: Please grab the new version form the project page and install some clients with is. Please report errors and inconsistence to the forum under m23.sf.net. Thank you!
