Have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras? You can search for these in System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. Or via the terminal
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

well by nature Ubuntu wont play windows .avi files by defalt so you may need some tweaking.
Lucky for you you can install the ubuntu restricted extras package, in your menu there is something called add/remove and from there you can try the restricted extras package first then we can go along if you still have issues.
But first lets try the ubuntu restricted extras package.

The Ubuntu Complete-Streaming Guide (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683) is always one good thread to look at too.

Gets you setup pretty much completely on almost all things proprietary.
