I am trying to set up ubuntustudio 8.04 ( or any ubuntu version for that matter ) on a brand new system. ubuntu doesn't seem to recognize the harddrives at all. have 2 seagate sata2 500gb harddrives on this system. i was able to install win2k, and see the harddrives on gparted live cd, so harddrives probably OK. gparted live gave me no recognizable options for format, i was looking for / or ext2 or ext3, but i have never used gparted live before. I tried to install kubuntu edgy, ubuntu gutsy and ubuntustudio 8.04 but all stopped when couldn't find the harddrives. anybody got any ideas where i can start with this???

Hi and welcome, have you checked the cd for errors? You may also see if the drives are seen in bios since it is a new system.
Also are they seen but gparted from the live cd under system, administration, partition editor I believe.

Thanks for the reply, have used the cd's for installs in the past, but just rechecked them and they are OK...assumed the bios saw the drives as i could install w2k, but rechecked and BIOS sees the drives....booted Gutsy 7.1 live, could not install, step 4, Partitioner gets to 46% complete and hangs for a while, then responds with no partitions....checked system->administration-.partition editor...no devices detected...this system has asus p5q motherboard, 4G Kingston RAM, 2X500G Seagate sata2 hdd.
