Good Afternoon Everyone,

I currently run Hardy on my Dell XPS 1210 and using the Gnome desktop. Now what I want to do is blow that away and reload. The reason for this is that Ubuntu come with alot of stuff I do not need like the games and a bunch of applications I have never used and will never use. I am also looking for a minimalistic environment. The research I have done I have come down to two possibilities on ways to reload my system.

One was was Crunchbang Linux which is based on Ubuntu. http://crunchbang.org/projects/linux/ I like how minimal it is and not a lot of extras I don't use.

Another was using a minimal cd for Hardy and loading only what I need. The only question I have on that is, if I go that route, the only thing I would need to is install is the gdm, and something like ubuntu-desktop-core right. I jusy want a system that has the bear minium and then I would go from there.

Is there something else I have to install to get a very minimal system?

Thanks for you help on this.

You would need to install xorg if you are wanting a graphical environment, have a read of these:

How is crunchbang in terms of stability? There is a funny disclaimer, quoted below:

I've been using Crunchbang for a couple of months, never had a crash. I used to use Ubuntu Studio Hardy with the real-time kernel and it crashed a couple of times every week.

I agree that's a pretty funny disclaimer. :)

So far for me it is VERY stable. The only minor issue I have had is that my key mapping seems to be a little off, meaning when I do a shift+2 instead of getting a "@" I get a "&". Now everything seems to be fine.

One of the reasons why I decided to do this was because I was getting tired of all the stuff that was beeing loaded that I was not using.

One Question I have is I might just be overlooking something very simple. But how the heck do I get a battery icon on the task bar in crunchbang? If I just could get one of those, I would be ecstatic.

You can also ask your battery icon question over on those forums.
