For installing programs use

system menu > admin > synaptic

Enable restricted and multiverse repositories from the repository settings to get a more complete list. Then click refresh.

Now you can search and install whatever you want in synaptic. For example search and install

ubuntu-restricted-extras

which contains java, codecs, and other goodies.

Yes there is. But first answer what error you get.

when i open synaptic it says"Unable to get exclusive lock

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first"

thats the error.

thats the error.

My second suggestion was to use the apt-get command but that'll also suffer from the same error.

Hmm. Did you do what the error says? Is any program like "add-remove software" or "system upgrade" open?
