Ok in system/admin/software sources/Unsuported updates "hardy-backports"

what are these used for? do i need to have it checked off?
i did try it said 127 new updates.

You don't need backports. They are newer versions of software in the supported repos, but the backports are not supported.

backports are software that is schedles to be updated for the newer version of ubuntu, but most can be ported to work on older version, hence the term backports.
Now be careful with these as some can break your system if your not too careful as they are not tested the same or may need another newer application that has not been backported yet.

ok thank you for that info wish i had asked this yesterday. but systems still working but not tried all apps yet.
