I need help configuring my serial port.

Hello, Iam VERY new to ubuntu, I am pleased that nearly everything went flawlesly when I switched from XP except I cannot use one of my serial devices. The device is a watch timing machine that plugs into the serial port, the software is windows based but Iam able to run it in a crossover program on ubuntu but the software cannot connect to the "com Port" what can I do to get this device to connect? ANY HELP WILL BE GREAT!!
