i then detach my cd rom drive from my computer . then when i try to boot up ubuntu. it fails . every time. 3 different install attempts

Is your BIOS set to check the CD before the hard drive?

very strange. system hangs when booting. even when just trying to enter bios. then after a few minutes will enter the bios screen.
then when i reboot after a few minutes.
then will give a error secondary master hard drive failed.
there is no hardrive attatched to that IDE channel. ill even disable it in bios. still no help. acting like a hardware problem.
but once i plug in the cdrom back into the ide cable (which is on the same cable as master hardrive in ide channel 1. boot up are fast and normal.

I wonder if you BIOS is corrupted. Do you know how to update or reinstall it?
