Hi

Open a terminal window by going "applications - accessories - terminal"

then enter

sudo displayconfig-gtk

then enter your password (as requested - note that it wont appear)

You then have a gui window. Select your own monitor and then resolution and it should work. If its not there, select "generic" and then the resolution of your monitor.
