In the LinkedIn group for Ubuntu Users / Linux Users a thread started looking for testimonials and reports of how company migrations have gone in the past. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_adoption was given as a reference where planned migrations were announced but follow-ups were said to be lacking.

I hope there are collections of these kinds of reports somewhere. I'm sure the Global Support & Services group runs into this question quite a bit. What are the best places to point people to?

Thanks,

Grant

I just want to ask. How does this fit into "Installation and Upgrades" ?

Please go and ask this in Community Cafe , its a light discussion topic and not a serious one as we expect.

Done, thanks, though I don't think getting people to choose Ubuntu is not serious. :-) I know what you mean.

Thanks for merging this, Sef. This question directly relates to our Bug#1 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1 which we all have a stake in.

This also may fit better in the "Ubuntu Testimonials & Experiences" which I failed to see when looking for the right place for this thread. Sorry for that.

I am pretty sure that the people requesting migration reports is looking to gain insight for planning their own migration. Best practices and things to watch out for help companies and their staff feel more comfortable in moving forward.

One piece of general advice directly related to "Installation and Upgrades" includes thoroughly checking for hardware compatibility. Those new to Ubuntu may not understand that some hardware runs better than others due to the support (or lack) of driver software and manufacturer support policies for Linux. Sources to use when researching include the Linux kernel docs, software driver packages, manufacturer websites and forum postings found with a search engine.

Understanding how the Linux community works and how to do one's own part in troubleshooting is another deciding factor in a migration's success. The most concise guide I have found is Eric Raymond's How to Ask Smart Questions. http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Either as a short term fix or part of a longer term plan for a corporate migration, Global Support & Services from Canonical can help fill in gaps in knowledge, especially in the beginning of a migration.

Thanks in advance for help in gathering additional resources that might be useful.
