I am sure I am not the only one thats had this idea, nor the first to mention it, but it deserves to be heard.

Whenever you see the Mac vs PC commercials on American television, who doesn't wish there was a character created for Linux as well. I laugh at the idea, but I just couldn't get a great mental image of the character to represent Linux.

Someone should make a parody add, or some kind of comic strip. I'd laugh.

Hahaha, I like it, but I hate to see the Linux guy made to be so obnoxious.

Here's a question, does the geek create the computer or does the computer create the geek?

I think the image of the unwashed boring geek who rants endlessly about open source is an unfortunate and hard to shake stereotype, but times and opinions are changing. Not that talking about open source is bad, but it really does sound like a religious tirade to those who do not understand, are totally uninterested or just want to use a computer rather than mate with it (like in the video that chilli bob posted). Radical ideas tend to need a slow and timely introduction!

Most of the people I know who use it are tech savvy, but far from being total geeks in the usual sense.

As linux becomes more refined, easy to use and if people could prove that linux IS a commercially viable platform for developers (ie the many using linux dont mind paying for games and 'special' software on occasion) then linux would be unstoppable. Until they do though, linux will rarely attract true professionals for specialized use in areas like film & media, photography, game designers, musicians, artists etc. While open source apps are excellent and good enough for 80% of people, they are usually not of industry standard grade. I know many professional artists and photographers who love using linux but cannot simply because there is no photoshop.

I wish I was a full blown geek, then I might at least know what I'm doing.

The reason I installed Linux in the first place was because Windows XP automatically installed some program which it said was checking my computer for illegitimately obtained software. This scared me, a lot.
At least with Linux, it's free and legal.

I 100% agree. I love the 'deer in headlights' look I get when explaining Ubuntu or Open Source to someone when I don't have my laptop near by.

Lol :)

When the idea of OS was new to me, i used to tell people about it. But it was not a 'deer in the headlights' look they gave me so muc as a glazed look of 'you poor, sad man' :D

Now i wait until at least they have tried it and like it before i even mention the ideas behind open source. After all i do believe in both small scale closed commercial and open source software so i am kind of neutral on that issue.
