The problem: I've tried every single driver I have been able to find for the nForce 750a SLI chipset - the most recent being 750a SLI. There's nothing on the nVidia website specifically, so that's no help. Whenever I install the most recent video drivers (through EnvyNG, or manually) here's what happens:
1) Normal boot
2) (Right as GDM starts) No login window - no output to monitor
I cannot for the life of me get this to work. This is a new system, so I'm just now updating to the 2.6.24.19 kernel. I don't think that should be causing these problems, but just in case, I thought I'd try it.
This is after editing my xorg.conf file several times, with absolutely no luck. After I have these problems I've been booting up in "safe mode" and resetting the xserver. When this happens, I can't go any higher than 1024x768 resolution.
Something I've just noticed that's odd: Ubuntu reports that it is running at 1024x768, but my monitor reports that it is running at 1280x800. Any thoughts?
Here's my hardware, PLEASE let me know of any incompatibilities or drivers I need. I'll let you know if I've already tried them or not.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M750SLI-DS4 (nForce 750a SLI chipset)
RAM: 2 x 2GB Corsair DDR2
HDD0: Maxtor 250GB SATA (dual-boot Ubuntu and Vista Ultimate)
HDD1: Seagate 750GB SATA (file storage)
Monitor: Gateway XHD3000 30" (max resolution 2560x1600 with DVI)
Graphics: XFX 8800GT
CD/DVD: Pioneer Blu-ray ROM / DVD+-RW / CD+-RW
Case: Antec Nine Hundred
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
Note: In order to get the system to install from the live CD (and to boot) I added these options to GRUB:
floppy=off all_generic_ide
I found that without this the live CD gave me an "fd0 I/O error" and regular boot just went into BusyBox.
Please help!
