Try running this command first:

sudo apt-get update
Then attempt to install whatever package you are trying to get from the repositories.

If it still doesn't work, you may want to change mirrors from System->Administration->Software Sources. Repositories sometimes go down, so switching mirrors usually fixes that. It's also nice to find a mirror that is faster than the main repos.

I have never seen anything like that before, let's check your sources file as well as some other info

cat /etc/apt/sources.list
lsb_release -a
apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6.22-15-generic
Also, let's try cleaning out the cache you have and re-downloading the files that have yet to install.

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install -f
Please post all the commands + output back here.

OK, it's possible that security.ubuntu.com repositories (or parts of them) are down and thus not responding right now. Let's comment out the entry for that repo in sources.list

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Now change the line in red so that it matches

Lol, what a mess, we'll take this slow. Let's autoremove and clean

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get clean
Now does

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
run ok?

If it's still complaining about linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-15-generic, then install that kernel itself

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.22-15-generic
Then try again.

I don't recall if this program exists in Gutsy (I think it does), but try going to System->Administration->Software Sources and uncheck everything in every tab. Then under the Ubuntu Software tab, check for main, universe, restricted, and multiverse. Under the Updates tab, enable -security and -updates. Back on the Ubuntu Software tab, where it says Download from: click Other. Now hit the Select Best Server button and let it do its search (may take a few minutes). When it's finished, accept its decision, then click Close on the Software Sources window. It will ask you to refresh/update, let it do this. When all that is done, please post your sources.list file again

cat /etc/apt/sources.list
PS: I deleted your duplicate post.

September 9th, 2008, 07:41 PM
ok....sorry...but i took some time catchin up with that..
now...
in ref to post 14:

also if i try to install that kernel i get:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

I disabled the security repositories (so you can't get updates from here, but that seems to be the problem...), and enabled the main, restricted, universe, and multiverse repos. Copy and paste that over your existing sources.list file, save and close, then run and paste here the output of

sudo apt-get update

There aren't specific proxy settings specifically for terminal, but you can configure some on your machine, probably from System->Administration->Network. Are you behind a proxy? It sounds like you can't even connect to the web outside of firefox - do you have special proxy settings there?

another thing.....without having to download anythin....can i not remove or undo what i have done today....i mean somehow remove the linux-backport-modules and the image both.... the clean seems to have removed them from /var/cache/apt/archives.....but still the system says there is a broken dependency...
so can i somehow remove this broken dependency without having to do anythin with downloading???

and yet another thing.....my dvd-rw drive is not functioning due to some hardware error.... i shall get it replaced eventually...but is there anyway i can upgrade to the new version of ubuntu?? if yes and if u can help me....please tell me the exact procedure as many of my friends had grub problems durin installation...i have a windows vista os along with ubuntu...
so if i can somehow boot from a usb drive...and upgrade...that'd be a relief...

OK, well I'm not sure what the issue is with your terminal, you may have to search around for that one. As long as you are able to take care of stuff through Synaptic, that is good.

The appropriate way to remove packages that you installed today would be to uninstall them through Synaptic. I'm not very good with using dpkg, all I can really suggest is trying

sudo dpkg --configure -a and seeing if it outputs anything (normally it doesn't).

As for your dvd drive, you need to start a new thread on that. For upgrade options, see community/HardyUpgrades (note the Known Problems section re: upgrading with kernel 2.6.22-14). Also know that Intrepid Ibex is set to be released at the end of October, but it is not a LTS release like Hardy is.

I think I do recall hearing about problems that some people had with GRUB when vista is installed, but I'm not sure on the details. You may need to research more or ask around about that one.

Logged into my ubuntuforums account after a really long time and was going through this post. I remember this happening when I was new to ubuntu and linux in general and hadn't really gotten the hang of it. I dont remember what the solution to this problem was, but I remember having fixed it and having subsequently upgraded to each new version of ubuntu as and when it was launched. ^_^

Most importantly, thanks a lot to Rocket2dMn for having been so patient!
