Does anyone know of one? Or should I just uninstall gnome? I don't want a desktop environment as I'm using Linux for school/development and I want to become expert with the CLI and it's functionality.

You should try the server version.
Also you can learn CLI without uninstalling gnome ...

The server version of Ubuntu comes as CLI only.
But if you don't want to download Ubuntu Server, you can just...uninstall GNOME i guess?
EDIT: Oh, if you still want to keep GNOME and get into a CLI session, just press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and to get backup to a GUI just press Ctrl+Alt+F7

Thanks for quick responses guys. That hot-key is useful, and I'll look into the low memory system install.

Is it still possible to do something like this?

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=386531

I downloaded the alternate desktop CD and didn't see the 'Install a command-line system' option. Using Hardy 8.04 btw.

I've also tried using the server edition but ran into issues installing it on my laptop.

Nevermind, pressing f4 in the install menu brought up the option

Are you going to mimic this guy: http://seanrtilley.blogspot.com/2008/06/goodbye-gui-thirty-days-of-command-line.html

Just use fvwm or another minimal window manager and use the terminal a lot. BEing GUI-celibate is just crazy.

Not enitrely GUI-celibate. I wanted to build off a bare-bones install and at the same time become really comforatable with using and navigating the system through the CLI. I did a command-line system install off the alternate CD and am using Openbox as my window manager. Basically I just want a minimal approach to a fast, efficient system.

That's how I installed my system. In my opinion, the best resource for Openbox is urukrama's Openbox Guide (http://urukrama.wordpress.com/openbox-guide/).

Minimal, lightweight Ubuntu is great. If you want to go to the next step in your quest for simple minimalism then Arch Linux (http://archlinux.org/) may be of interest.

+1 Sounds like you want a minimal installation as your base, or go to something like Arch linux. Actually, arch is probably better suited to your needs due to it's build from the bottom up, keep-it-simple philosophy.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Arch is pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
