It's not good for your teeth, shouldn't do anything to the braces.
But yes, using a straw is much better than giving it up.

I think mine has the coolest collection of knicknacks, and (surprisingly) the most displays. Note that my N810 has a few applications running via SSH-tunneled X, so it counts as a third connected display. The Dell monitor isn't actually showing anything, and X doesn't much like it right now, but it IS detected on some level. So... there! :)

Excuse the Windows XP sticker down below. Rest assured, that computer has been completely liberated.

Edit:
Link to really huge version (3.5 MB) (http://dylanmccall.googlepages.com/img_0321Modified.jpg). Alas, I wasn't able to get very good DoF without a tripod, so it's rather fuzzy.

True, but I never drank lots of soda to begin with so I didn't care too much when I got braces. I usually go for the iced tea when I need a little sugar.

The computer under your desk, would that be any chance be a Compaq, Compaq Presario more specifically?

Because it looks strikingly similar to my old Compaq Presario.

Mr. Picklesworth
September 21st, 2008, 06:09 AM
Why yes, it is! A Compaq Presario with 400 mHz Celeron, a RAM upgrade and an Asus wireless LAN card. USB ports on the front and 6-tonne metal case. It's a classic!
You can have it if you'd like :P

I was using it as a server for a while until I narrowed it down as the cause of house-wide radio interference. Now it's a footrest, much as my Dell monitor is now a headphone stand. I've basically taken the "paperweight" thing to another level.
(On the topic of which, my Supercard CF seems to have just become a paperweight itself; it isn't booting or even appearing as a GBA cart. Curses! I was just about to start a "most connected displays" contest with my DS running Linux... Instead I'll have to start a "most pieces of paper individually affixed to desk by random expensive objects" contest)

Musta missed this post, heh... sadly almost nothing that is on my desk doesn't belong there... the only things I can see that aren't suppose to be there are the bottle of dew, my cigar guillotine, the graphic novel, the glass, and the pot holder...

I have some papers up on my printer that are suppose to be there, cables for regularly used peripherals, a few CD's, notes, my warhammer online preorder receipt, a few pens, a sharpie for labeling CD's, a headset for talking over ventrilo, an art tablet for when I feel like drawing, a few card readers.

In all honesty it's just the fact that my desk is just too damn small for all the crap I use pretty much daily.

Wow. I like your workspace.

Thanks, you looked at it at just the right time. A few hours earlier and you would have been stopped by a failed DNS record (my IP changed, after three years with the same dynamically assigned IP...).

I just printed some new labels for the drawers with Tango icons on them, instead of using my poorly hand-written ones. I'll get pics when I'm not too lazy to bother.

Also have plans of buying two cheap ($13) Logitech keyboard/mouse sets for the two desktops, both of which have old basic keyboards anyway, and possibly some cheap speakers (don't get me wrong, the JBLs there are nice, but they're old and a bit warn out, plus having to bridge the desktop on the right is a pain).

I'd also like to get a whiteboard for the wall, and I have plans to get a portrait of Linus and Steve Jobs to hang on the wall (with a portrait of Bill Gates, which I already have - and no, it's not a dart board) behind where I was standing.

A quick question before I begin: How many of you actually stick those Ubuntu stickers on your machines? I've ran through three of them so far as I'm on a laptop and the paper sticker is under where I rest my hand. I wanted my last one to last longer, so I taped it down with scotch tape and cut the excess away. Can't see it in my pics, though.

It would seem that I should check my isos before burning them. The image on my monitor is evidence of a bad Linux Mint burn.

Here are mine, from my old apartment. This picture is... 2 months old I believe. I'll make a new updated one of my current desktop and post it, but for now, just to get the idea -

My setup (http://jablons.com/pictures/realdesktop.jpg).
Big image, click at your own risk. 2 computers are missing from the shot -- one's downstairs (family computer) and another is hidden behind the wall.
All of the x86 computers (except the MacBook) you see there are pre-2000.
The iBook G3 (if you can spot it you get a cookie) is from 2001 or something, and the other three devices (the iPods and the palm) are not x86 computers.

I'm somewhat ascetic when it comes to furniture...the only piece of furniture in my room is the mat, but then again, it's not like I've got place for much else.

And I pay €60 a month for it. Oh well, five unsecured wireless networks with great signal included in price :guitar:

My workspace recently has started being astoundingly cool now that I have my second monitor working again -- properly :)

So it's attached (with some minor digital enhancements to highlight key areas).

And yes, that's a vertical screen layout. With a default GNOME wallpaper. And Scribes and Nautilus in Spatial mode. And a Star Trek set photograph.
I'm pretty weird.

wrtpeeps
November 29th, 2008, 02:02 AM
One thing that seriously bugged me with dual monitors on ubuntu is taskbar behaviour.

Mr. Picklesworth
November 29th, 2008, 02:11 AM
That's actually one of the reasons I'm going vertical. With a horizontal layout, it can't seem to decide between screen 0 or screen 1 for either panel and they ended up being lost at some point. Further issues arose because one monitor is taller than the other, while they share the same width in pixels... so it's more balanced and symetrical to have the desktop more rectangular shaped. (Surprisingly, a good half of the GNOME wallpapers fit the tall screen thing perfectly!). Nautilus is really messed up either way, though; the desktop starts on the secondary screen instead of primary and the windows (in spatial mode) end up appearing at coordinates global to both monitors as a whole instead of a specific screen, which means stuff always appears on the top when I'm working on the bottom.

I definitely would prefer one huge monitor over two here, but I had this one sitting around as a glorified headphone stand so it had to be used :P
Besides, it's a good USB hub!

Oh, and I came up with what would be a wonderful innovation: A sticky mouse pointer (like we have sticky windows) for each screen. At the moment, Fitt's law is entirely broken with dual monitors.

The window list, however, I find astoundingly cool. If you place a window list applet on the second monitor as well as the first, they will change to only display windows on the current screen. That way, the top window list has windows on the top window and the bottom window list has windows on the bottom window. Very neat :)

Firstly, love the bonsai tree. Secondly, lets see the rest of that audio setup!

Okay... things have gotten a little messy since I took that photo. And to be fair I had to gimp a screenshot over the monitor because you just can't get a nice result with a digital camera. Also, you should know that the bonsai tree... has been dead for years. I keep it because I think it still looks cool, but I shifted the tint in that other photo to make it look alive. So here's the setup:

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/workstation1.jpg

32" JVC TV hooked up via S-Video. The keyboard is a Yamaha DJX hooked up via MIDI cables. The amp is a Panasonic SA-XR50:

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/ampsmall.png

My front speakers:

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/workstationfront.jpg

All I know about them is they sound fantastic and my dad acquired them from someone we used to live next to about a decade ago. They just gave them away. I couldn't believe the sound these old things could produce.

Under my desk I have this for a center speaker (shown with and without the face):

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/workstationcenter1.jpg

For my rear speakers:

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/rear.jpg

They were the cheapest thing Best Buy had in a size that I wanted to match the front and I think they sound just fine.

Finally, here's what's directly behind me when I sit in my office chair:

http://www.davestechsupport.com/blog/images/seats.jpg

Both sides recline and out pop footrests. Very nice movie theater setup for a small space.

I know there are quite a few audiophiles who go to brick-a-brak markets and such just looking for old audio equipment.

Anyway, cool setup.

No, I bought it off ebay for about 70 or 80 bucks from someone else who grew it. I believe it was about 10 or 12 years aged. They're very difficult to take care of here; the climate just doesn't cut it. It rained one day when I had forgot to bring it back inside... and you could easily see within a few hours that it had suffocated to death. Lesson to me: Don't bother with these kinds of trees unless you have a dedicated greenhouse you can keep it in.

I thought it did die, but I really appreciate your post. And every computer is welcome. No matter the lack of flash it has. I was more or less wondering how people configured their desktops with their desk, like the setup they had. But desktops themselves are welcome too. I was having a bit of trouble figuring out what to do, since desks are expensive, and I needed a new chair as well. But I did buy a table and chair that I enjoy very much at Ikea for a little over 100 dollars.

Saw this type of thread on a different forum, and didn't see it here. (although I may be mistaken...)

Anyways, it's simple, I'm just curious as to the setups of other Ubuntu users here. :)

Yes, I know, it's awful. Doing a new build in August, as well as a new desk.

Alas, I have no camera (I really need to get one) - but imagine a desk upon which is a large monitor, a keyboard, mouse, two speakers, subwoofer, and netbook. Beneath my desk are two computers. Naturally, there are cables all over the place.

Thought I'd get my workspace a go being as how I spend half the year sitting at it... it's kind of my second home :D

Here's a description of what you see numbered in the image.

1) 24" monitor hooked up to a Sunfire V245 that I use as my recording machine. On the same monitor I also remote login to another V245 that houses a lot of my quality control, and then also a V240 that serves as my information manager. Running Soloaris 9 with 8GB of RAM on these machines.

2) CCTV monitor

3) 24" monitor hooked up to a beefed up Dell Optiplex 960 with Windows XP. I sit here and play on the forums

4) xhost monitor showing output from another system in the office.

5) My Acer One Aspire netbook with Natty 11.04

6) Dual monitor setup to a V240 running my data acquisition stuff on Solaris 10, also 8GB RAM.

7) Dual monitor hooked up to Dell Precision 690 using Redhat 4.6 to run our real time quality control.

If it's just a laptop but sits on a desk can it be classified as a desktop?
