Hello, last night I was using my computer running ubuntu Hardy Heron, and trying to install mandriva as a split partition via a live disk.

I didnt think I had clicked to do anything, but when i ejected the live CD and tried to boot into Ubuntu, the following error happened. A black screen appeared with:

GRUB Loading stage 1.5

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

This looks bad...it wont boot at all.
Is there anyway to save my data or is a complete reinstall necesary, wiping everything?...savage, but I'll learn my lesson :)

Cheers for now, AJ

Not bad at all. Go to:

www.supergrubdisk.org (http://www.supergrubdisk.org)

Download the iso, make a cd and boot from it. This is a really common error. You should have a look at that page and learn a bit about the grub while you are there. :)

This site is a mine of info:

You should be up in no time with any luck, but supergrubdisk should do the trick. Next time, you may have learned enough to fix this manually. Gotta go out for awhile but will check out how you are going later so let us know.
