[SOLVED] Cannot change desktop background

Hey all,
I am having problems with my background on my desktop. No matter what I do I cannot get it to show a picture, it will only show the solid colors. Please advise

How are you trying to change the background--are you right-clicking on an image in Firefox and selecting "Set as Desktop Background," right-clicking on the desktop and selecting "Change Desktop Background," or doing it some other way?

Also, please tell us which desktop environment you're using (Gnome, KDE...?) and which version of Ubuntu you run.
