How to restart of xfce?

I posted on another forum but haven't got a reply. xfce starts then goes back to login I had compiz going for 3 weeks so I installed emerald and then restarted then when I logged in it went back to login. so I went into safemode terminal open xfce4-session and xfwm and need to know how to save and restart

If you are in safe mode, I think you may have to reboot, but try </etc/init.d/gdm start> It might work. Nothing to lose eh?
