I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but is there any way that you can remove the names from icons on the desktop in ubuntu so only the icon displays and not the name? Thankyou in advanced.

right click >> rename and just press the space bar ;)
EDIT:appears to only work for files and folders

Nope doesn't work the old names just come back when I unclick it

Open gconf-editor, and go to apps>nautilus>preferences and change the desktop font to 0 (eg. change it from Sans 10 to Sans 0), then there's no text visible.

Thanks a lot mate. U solved my problem. Just for provenance (and peoples opinions) this is what i was trying to acheive with my desktop. What do people think?
