Hi,
I recently bought a new graphics card, an xfx 8600gt 512 mb ddr2 (pci express). I did this after looking through the forums and various web sites without finding too many negative comments and a plethora of good ones. Not having a lot of money I was just looking to improve on the old and trusty 7200gs mainly for playing UT2k4 which the old card just manages at an acceptable frame rate and graphics detail.
New card in a fresh install of Hardy updates done restricted drivers enabled UT2k4 installed and fired up, oh dear quite pathetic. Envy used UT2k4 started not quite as bad but still pathetic. Tried nvidia-settings performance with no effect.
The problems is not frame rate that is way up there but the card seems to pause for a micro second at regular intervals or when there are a lot of bots about and a redeemer goes off the card seems to lose its mind and say oh no I can't handle this, and becomes all jerky.
Thinking the card might be faulty I installed XP with sp3 drivers directx 08/08 the latest 8 series drivers fired up the game and it played no problem.
I am back on Ubuntu Hardy Heron with the old 7200gs wondering have I wasted my money, do I need a specific nvidia driver, or am I missing something?
Your help will be appreciated.
Gillen.
