When I type "xinit -- :1 vt12" in the terminal, the background turns gray and the mouse becomes a cross, as it should, I think. The same thing happened to me at school, when using Red Hat. So I guess it is me doing wrong...

In the terminal I get this message:

AUDIT: Fri Sep 5 22:38:06 2008: 6712 X: client 1 rejected from local host (uid 0)
No protocol specified

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections

Should I change something in the .xinitrc file? Please answer as if you were talking to a complete idiot, cause I'm new to ubuntu and linux.

Thanks for any reply.
