I am a member of a fairly active indie music community and we are looking at the possibility of starting a torrent tracker (its all above board user created content, http://8bitcollective.com/ if anyone is interested) but I don't have even the faintest idea of where to start.

I use Bluehost as my webhost and based on the info I have found (which isnt the much) most webhosts make it difficult to host torrent trackers, does this mean I would to have the torrent tracker installed on a physical machine permanently on and connected to the internet or are there ways to work with webhosts to do this?

Any guidance would be most helpful.

ive never setup a torrent tracker specifically but after setting up enough servers I think you are going to want to have a physical box. Also while ive never used it I am going to recommend open tracker. It seems to be very popular and is open source which is always nice.

I recommend looking up Gazelle, I'm a member of what.cd and TehConnection who both use it, and it's fast, looks great, and has tons of features.
