ISO download MD5 checksum is OK and integrety check of burned CD also ok.

Hardware: 1.67 GHz X2000 AMD Athlon, 512MB, 40GB hard disk
S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR 4.
Software: XP Pro with SP2 using the whole PC (no dual-boot
partitions yet)

On bootup from CD when selecting use of Ubuntu in read-only mode:

the oscillatiing, bouncing horizontal little bar
shows for a couple of minutes and then changes to a normal
progress bar which shows for less than a minute

a dialog pops up having 'Ubuntu IS RUNNING IN LOW-GRAPHICS
MODE' as titlebar. There is a message 'your screen and
graphics card could not be detected correctly'

the dialog has a big button marked Plug and Play and an associated combobox and comboboxes for screen resolutions
and screen frequency

there is also a checkbox with title 'always run in low-graphics
mode' and Cancel, OK and Continue buttons.

I have tried all permutations of buttons etc in the dialog, but
result is always a blank screen and a totally non-responsive system. It does not pick up key, mouse or even the OFF button and there is no sound or signs of disc activity. Dead like a door nail. Only way out is powering off and then back on.

If I can make it work with the LIVE CD I would then like to use
the wubi loader (that only works with the Live cd).

The graphics works fine on XP from 640x480 to 1024x768.

Would be grateful for hints.
