I just finished a post on wondering how to really sweeten up my AWN, when one of the posters enlightened me to Cairo.

I had been using Avant for a couple of months, and was not disappointed, but now that I have Cairo installed for startup, I am rather pleased with the simplicity, the themes, the fluidity, just the overall program.

On the reverse, most reviews I read online were always falling in the direction of Avant. Now that I made the switch, I figured I would stat a thread to get a sense of what other people think, and maybe hear and see some great customizations other people have done with their Window Managers.

Below is a quick shot of my desktop.

I look forward to learning what you all think about these great programs!

I first tried using Cairo dock on my box but for some weird reason captions were overlapping each other. Then, I switched to Avant and so far I'm happy with it.

Yeah, I updated my Cairo the other day, and I completely lost my Mac OSX theme. I was pissed. Now I am stuck with I Cairo. But I still cant get into avant for its lack of smoother animations.

Tried both and I found I really didn't like either one at all. Cairo because of how complicated it seems, and AWN because it was frequently either crashing or bugging out somehow.

I have AWN installed, and I figured I would try out Cairo. Cairo is just way too complicated to set up, and AWN satisfies my needs.

Cairo or Kiba-Dock always win me over :).

I gave my vote to Cairo though I'm not using a dock right now.

I used to have a beautiful set up with Cairo, but I reinstalled Ubuntu and lost everything, and could never find the same package. All the ones I download and install now are screwy.

So then I switched to AWN, which is solid, but not as fancy as Cairo IMO. Then I got tired of docks and decided to go with good ol' tradition panels.

I love AWN so that gets my vote and it gets better all the time. In my experience 0.2.6 is rock solid stable - I've not had a crash with it yet.

I've always experienced more features in Cairo but I definitely don't mind some AWN curves every now and then :)

I used Avant previously and liked it for a while. I then started experiencing numerous crashes (Dock wouldn't load, programs wouldn't launch).

I then tried Cairo and so far I like it more. I haven't messed with all of the settings yet (Just moved and still unpacking my stuff), seems more customizable than Avant (could be a good or bad thing ;) ).

i honestly do not prefer docks at all, unless it's vista, and its on autohide, but i don't believe in the dock concept when it comes to my vision of the linux concept.

I don't use docks.

I've tried a lot of them for testing purposes and Cairo-Dock was the best by far.

I've been using Avant now for a while, but since my fresh install of lucid,
I'm trying out Docky...
It seems to have less plugins for now, but I find the zoom (like OSX) quite handy when there's a lot of applications in the dock.

It's a newer thingy than the others isn't it ?

I like both, it all depends on the look I want for my desktop. Right now I'm running AWN because this theme looks great with Radiance.

I have not tried AWN yet , and have many Cairo themes with custom icons setup . If I run into problems Cairo
I will try AWN . I think the default icons for both look absolutely awful , but thats easy to change.

avant always crashed for me or it failed to work as it was intended. It's a pile of crap so far as I am concerned. Cairo-dock started out as a cairo performance test, I haven't honestly ever managed to make it run consistently in any useful mode.

For my docking needs I have docky, it works very well and is sufficiently featureful. I also find the developers very pleasant for the most part which is important to me.

why use docks while there is alt+f2? :)
