Do you mean the Dock from Mac OS X Leopard? If you got it working under Hardy, I'm impressed.
Anyway, there is a way to run programs at startup. It's called Sessions Preferences:
1) Go to System > Preferences > Sessions
2) Click to the "Startup Programs" tab.
3) Click the "Add" button.
4) Fill out the appropriate fields. The "Command" field is where you type the name of the executable. For example, to run the Gnome text editor you would type 'gedit' without the quotes.
5) Click Ok, then Close.
6) Log off, then back on to make sure it worked.

If it did work, then you're good to go. Good luck!
