How high from your desk can you lift your mouse, and motion continue to be registered?

PS. 100th post!

+1, hadn't really thought about it in the past.

Don't we just love the way the dust collects in the older-style mice with the roller balls?

It's not usable, but it moves at 2cm

The mice I normally use these days are of the "optical" variety which light up when used, but I still have a couple with a ball inside (one only a few months old, purchased as a backup for an older machine currently in retirement awaiting repairs)
One thing I've found is that dust and other muck accumulates in awkward places, making the pointer movement jerky...

Makes playing counterstrike more interesting though.

I don't one; I have a mouse with a ball.

Mine is designed not to move the move when lifted from the desk, so when gaming I can turn around properly.

Thanks for all of the replies. I wanted to make sure that the optical mouse would register movement of a CD from about 2/3 centimeter away. I still use the classic ball, and will have to clean it just because of the dust sometimes. If any of you are wondering, the CD, will be like the vinyl disc for a turntableish device. Here is a link. Only like 1/3 cm, but it's fairly usable. It's just a simple logitech mouse, on the back it simply says "wheel mouse". I think it's optical (what's the difference between optical and laser), I got it at Goodwill for 1$, it works amazingly well :)

Around 1cm.

To really give accurate answers, we should have all given the type of surface we used, and what mouse.

Sure why not.

I'm currently using a small notebook mouse . It was the cheapest I could find and is better than my earlier mid-range priced notebook mouses.

I'm currently using it on the cover of the table (not sure what that's called). It doesn't affect the mouse at all.

What type of mouse do you have? I bought a laser mouse a few years ago, but quickly went back to optical because it was still receiving input when I would lift and move it.

I have a Razer Deathadder (http://www.razerzone.com/p-69-razer-deathadder-gaming-mouse.aspx) on a Steelseries S&S (http://www.steelseries.com/int/products/surfaces/ss), I was a serious gamer before moving to Ubuntu. ;)
