View Full Version : [all variants] Anyone know how to access a Sony ICD-P620 digital voice recorder over USB?

So I have a spiffy new toy, a digital voice recorder. I know I can transfer recordings using the line out (well, head phones jack anyway) connected to the line in on my sound card, but I was hoping to use the USB capabilities. I tried plugging it in hoping it would show up as a USB drive in Nautilus or Konqueror, but no luck. Anyone out there know how/if Ubuntu can recognize the device? I know the box says Windows only, but a guy can dream, right? :) Thanks for any ideas.

I'm replying to bump this. I too have obtained an ICD-P620 and would like to not have to find a ******* machine to use it on. Any advice? Anyone? Anyone?

I'm working on this too. If nothing else, you could connect the audio out jack on the voice recorder to your mic in jack on your computer. Hit record on the computer, and hit play on the voice recorder. Not the best method, but it's a method.

If anybody tries this, I'd be interested in hearing about the quality of the resulting file.

That would be fine if wasn't recording things that are 1, 2, or 3 hours long, because that KILLS workflow. ::sigh:: Anyone? ANYONE?!?!

Half as a bump, I'll mention that I just went out and found a windows computer. Then I installed the 50MB program on it, and then I extracted and converted the file to an MP3. Pretty annoying.

I think the lesson is to avoid Sony.

Six months since last post, maybe there is an update.

I would probably guess that because it is proprietary, that support for Ubuntu would probably be limited.

Although, I am hoping for some good news.

Same here. I have one and just need to be able to download my recordings. Surely a fearless hacker out there has come up with a solution?

I saw a post on another forum that mentioned that usb audio devices are not automatically mounted in ubuntu and that PolicyKit could potentially fix that. However no details on how to edit the PolicyKit.conf file were included. Does that ring any bells for anyone?????

Thanks!!!!

I have the almost identical problem, except my voice recorder is from Olympus. I know that I can get the Olympus driver, install it on a Windows pc, and I can use the recorder, but I don't want to do it that way.

I can tell you that when I have the recorder plugged in, and I open a terminal screen and type "lsusb" at the command line, I can see that the voice recorder was recognized. I am using Ubuntu Remix 9.04 on my Acer netbook.

So, if it is recognized, then maybe and audio software can get the recordings on it. I don't know yet how, or what software, but maybe somebody here can read this and help us.

I hope this thread doesn't get archived or forgotten, because I really want to use my voice recorder on Ubuntu not Windows.

Good luck.

Hi all, I think I'm having a similar problem. I bought the px720, shelling out extra bucks for its mp3 capabilities (all cheaper models only record WMV). When I plug the device in via USB, nothing happens. the "lsusb" command shows it as SONY in BUS 001 but I don't know what to do with this information.

I hope we can get this problem solved!

(I'm running Linux Mint 7)

Wow, I can't believe nobody's been able to solve this one... I happened to get a Windows netbook but I still would prefer to do the bulk of my work in Ubuntu on my main computer. Is there any further information I can provide the community that will help solve this?

Hey,

I have the same problem with my sony icd-p620. I have to transcribe my interviews for my thesis soon, so I think I will have to find a computer with windows.
I have windows 7 running in virtual box but it wasn't able to mount it just like my ubuntu 10.04...
HEEEELP!!!
