View Full Version : [all variants] Where do gdm / X / xfce / gnome store screen resolution

Hi everyone

As I had to learn that /etc/X11/xorg.conf no longer is the central place for all screen resolution related settings, I wonder where they might be.

My install ended in incorrect screen settings, which I partly was able to fix through a gui-program for my graphical account, so to say. They were not stored in xorg.conf.
gdm was very hard to convince of my computers screen resolution, which at the moment is producing strange settings in xorg.conf.

Please answer only when you really know the answer. There are so many threads about how to trick and cheat until it works.

I would like to know how it works today.
I would like to know which config files need to be known and how they work.

Tanks for your help!
Cheers
