My laptop is kind of freaking out, and I think it might be a hardware problem. I want to double check before going out to buy more RAM (or even a new laptop), but I'm not sure what sort of hardware diagnostics to run. I ran the onboard memory test and get multiple errors, but when I run the same memory test from a CD, it runs fine.

Are there any FOSS hardware diagnostic tools that I could use to make sure my laptop is alright? Thanks.

What do you mean when you say freaking out?

For Ram, since you already getting different results fromn 2 Memtest runs. Try downloading the memtest only cd from http://www.memtest.org/#downiso and run it. Best 2 out of three pretty much.

Also if you know what type of HDD you have, i.e. like Seagate/Westren Digital/Maxtor.

You can goto the maufacture site, and usually they have downloads for diagostic's cds to check the HDD for errors. I.E. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=701&sid=30&lang=en for westren digital.

Overheating could also be an issue, is the laptop hot when it starts freaking out?
