I am interested in installing mythtv on my ubuntu laptop. Well, actually I have installed the packages for the program just for fun, but I haven't configured it and have no idea how to do so.

Pretty much, I know nothing about capture cards. Not even enough to ask a question about them. I don't really understand what kind of hardware I need for this, and so forth, so pretty much just give me a basic run through. Will a capture card get shows from my satellite TV or just over-the-air or what?

I know this is a really vague problem, but try to help out. Thanks. :)

Follow this tutorial http://www.parker1.co.uk/mythtv_ubuntu.php

Unfortunately, MythTV is not easy to configure.

A capture card works pretty much like a VCR. It depends on which input slots you have. For example I have a very old and basic card which has RF input for regular antenna cables and Composite/S-Video input for setup boxes. So I can watch pretty much everything or even plug a camera in it If a had one.

Modern capture cards can also have digital input slots.
