Okay,I am new to Ubuntu.. I decided I would give it a try, so I got one of the installers (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition - Supported to 2011) and I burned it to a disk. Everything works fine, but when I try to install it, it says,"Loading linux kernel." When it finishes loading the kernel it comes up with a black screen with white text [Pretty much like dos] and says,"No setup signature..." with no options. What should I do? How can I install ubuntu?

When you downloaded the iso did you check that the md5sum matched? Also have you checked the cd for errors after you burn't it?

Nope, and no...Do you have a link? [I'm currently away from home]Is there a way to check it from the cd? [I checked for errors at that page on boot, but it said the same error]

Okay, I just decided to redownload it. I checked the md5's and they are the same..I'll burn it now..Which iso burner do you recommend?

If you are burning it from windows you can use imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com/). When you burn the iso burn at x4 or less. Then when you boot the cd one of the options at the main menu is to check the cd for defects, do that and see if everything is ok.

Okay, I checked for messed up files, and got nothing. I am installing it now, and it got to what looked like a bird screen..I was able to move my mouse fine, so I just left it running..I came back later and it went black and it is just sitting there? Is it still installing?

When I first booted up with my new cd, I click the "Check cd for defects"
Then, after that got done, it said there were none. So I rebooted and clicked "Install Ubuntu"
It has been running for about an hour now. Around 30 minutes into it, I got this screen with my mouse on it. The screen had this picture of what looked like a bird.

Here is the picture I saw:

Then about 10 minutes later, it went black..After that the screen came back up again. Is it still installing, or what?

If you haven't gone through the install procedure and have only booted the cd it hasn't started yet.

What hardware do you have - make model of premade - how much memory - it needs 384MB.

Okay, well I just inserted it into windows and set it to a partition. I can boot into a command line interface, but what do I do from there?

Ubuntu requires a min of 384 mb ram to run, if you have less then this in the machine I would suggest trying xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) which works better on less ram.

Yeah, how much memory do you have on your machine?

I should have figured as much. That old laptop only has 256mb's of ram. I'll get xubuntu.
