I think you would be much happier with the EEEPC 901 if you can come up with the money. I am going to be getting one for the next quarter of college.

$500+ is a little over budget

I have a 2G Surf... I'd advise getting a little bit more under the hood than it offers. First off, I had to actually install Ubuntu to run from the SD Card slot. Which was a pain. I've heard there's a eeeUbuntu floating around now, I'll have to give it a try sometime... but I also found the 2G to be just a little under-powered for anything more than checking my email.
At least the 900 model has 1 GB RAM. I'd advise that, even if it is more expensive than the 2G.

Or you could get the plain ol' G Netbook that has gOS (pretty much Ubuntu) installed.

I have my eye on this little beauty:
Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087¤t-category-id=02695ADDF94544E5A11D24AEBC064493&menu-id=products)
The price starts off at $399 (last I heard) and *should* have the ability to run Ubuntu.

I've hear a lot about the Acer Aspire as it uses the Atom CPU which is a good following and from a few videos on YouTube is looks like it runs Ubuntu nicely -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF-INdJ1PXs
Also,I'm not sure if you can get the Advent 4211 in the US but it's a re-branding of the MSI Wind which as also got good reviews.

The battery life on all of the netbooks other than the eee 901/1000 is sad and pathetic.
The Aspire One's SSD is super-slow, and has difficulty running larger OSs than the default from what I hear.
Edit: The site linked for the Sylvania says it has an Atom and netbook remix, but the version I find for sale always has the Via and gOS.
