View Full Version : Infractions for "Use this app instead"

This drives me nuts! people ask for help getting an app to work, and half the people on there reply that app sucks, or use this one instead. This isn't answering the posters question, and it isn't solving the problem.

There are several reasons why people do that:

Trying to be helpful (ie, finding an alternative that works is often easier than trying to fix something. What would you say to someone trying to install Flash with automatix or whatever?)
Trying to show a "better" app, which may be an opinion, but can often be true (especially if the one being asked about is old or obsolete)
Fanboyism. This ranges from joking to trolling. Trolling is against the CoC and can be infracted.

We can't have a blanket rule like you worded (I'm guilty of it, often as a joke for Fx or E***s users, because Opera and Vim are superior), but you can report off topic or flamebaiting posts.

I agree its neither helpful or a good look for the Forum. But hard to police.

LaRoza is right , the best way is to report them and staff can deal with it

I agree with KiwiNZ on this; cases that you feel are inappropriate should be reported and handled individually by staff. There are certain times when it might be appropriate to suggest an alternate (i.e. discontinued app with universally agreed replacement) but certainly there's also plenty of times when it's not helpful to do so.

I've even seen examples before where people sugested different distros or desktop environments to work around simple problems I will report such things in the future
