I know that when things ship with KDE as opposed to gnome they have different apps installed or used with the system. ie/ Koffice vs open_office

i dont really know why this is, i assume they synergize somehow.

But does xfce have its own apps? or does it use the same ones as gnome?
If yes then why does KDE have its own apps.
If no then what apps does xfce need, or what apps can it not use?

Hi Frito, this page will show you the main applications that come with Xubuntu (Ubuntu+Xfce): http://xubuntu.org/tour

You can install any of the applications from Ubuntu or Kubuntu if you're using Xubuntu. They might not be as fast as the "native" Xubuntu apps (because they require Gnome or KDE dependencies) but they should work just fine.

Mainly the difference between the 3 distros is the windows manager. The "core" is the same.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any specific questions.

would installing apps that bring gnome/kde dependancies with them slow down the whole system or just that app?

I have apps from KDE, Gnome and XFce and I use Gnome for my DE. I don't see any performance impact. The Xfce apps tend to be lighter than their Gnome or KDE counterparts so they launch a bit quicker, but that's the only difference I've noticed.
