They require it for mencoder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEncoder).

Why don't you want to install mplayer? It rocks.

No I like the totem movie player I feel like I'm bloating my computer if I have to install a media player that I will never use. Is there no way around this?

you can usually install mplayer-nox

I believe it's mplayer-nogui (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/mplayer-nogui).

Most programs are not built from the ground up. Web browsers, multimedia apps, and image apps almost always use another backend for rendering and display/playing media.

Watch a dvd in ASCII with mplayer. :) It is pretty cool, actually.
