Is there any way to install Xubuntu on a hard drive but not configure for that computer?

I have an old laptop that is missing the proprietary floppy and CD drives thus can't provide a boot drive. What I was thinking, was to use a second computer that can boot a linux CD and install Xubuntu but not configure for that computer. Then, take the hard drive and place back into the laptop and then configure Xubuntu for that machine.

Have you considered unetbootin?:

Thanks.

I don't think UNetbootin will work to well in this case because the hard drive I am using doesn't have Windows on it.
