(I'm posting this here as it's alpha, though it's probably not the best place for it.)

Very cool.

It's essentially Launchy/Quicksilver/Gnome-Do for Firefox.

Cool, but isn't ubiquity also the name of the Ubuntu Installer?

Very interesting, thanks for the heads up jfernyhough.
Sadly, though,

On Linux, Ubiquity isn't fully supported yet. Some of the commands will work, but others won't. This is because we're missing a system to display output messages.

Yes, indeed :) Let's just hope that it is not one of those blueprints that are filed as requests. It says that implementation is "Unknown"

We should soon see I guess.

I was just about to post this in the Cafe - I reckon it needs more attention. I think it's the best thing to happen since web search.

Someone write an Ubuntu Forums plugin now! :p

EDIT: Thanks bapoumba.

You mean just a Firefox extension, or is it a command for Ubiquity?

I'd love to just type "ubu cafe <Title> <Message/forum post> <Tags>" to post a message here.

And how do I summon the ubiquity menu? Super+Space, Alt+Space, and Ctrl+Space don't work for me

I had this same problem. Change the shortcut for it to Shift Space and it should work.

(go to about:ubiquity for the options - this is where you can change the various settings)

I have kept the Windows errr... Meta Key + Space to launch. I love the integration with GMail and GMaps

Which comes to my mind. Its more like a GNOME-do for the Web!

No, I meant a firefox extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2302). It's not that thrilling, especially as it doesn't work with Fx3.

That makes no sense in reply to my post (especially if you read the whole conversation). :)

I just added the Ubiquity plugin, and let me just say that I've tried and used a LOT of FF plugins on both Ubuntu and Win. This one is very, very worth it. I'm loving the quick command functionality and the mashup goodness.

It's remarkable for 0.1 software. I'm really hoping the Linux community can provide what's missing to make this an option for us.

I'll stick with Gnome Do.

It's not restricted to Firefox. :)

I changed the hotkey as noted. However, this shift + space is a bad combo. When I tried capitalising the first letter of this reply, for example, it invoked Ubiquity when I really just wanted to type a capital "I".

Any ideas?

Absolutely love this. When I watched the video and saw some of the examples I just though "wow!". This sort of thing has the chance to revolutionise how we browse the Internet. And it is also a bit like a terminal for your browser, which if you use the terminal as much as me, is a very good thing.

Was upset to find the Identi.ca command for it that was kicking around the Internet didnt work so I hacked it up until it worked: http://bobbo.me.uk/code/ubiquity/

i thought you were talking about the ubuntu GUI installer, which is also named ubiquity

I think they should change the name or something. This could get confusing. I also thought it was talking about the Ubuntu installer.

This is a great little tool - shame it doesn't work fully on Linux yet (lack of a good inegrated notification system) but when it does work, it works VERY well!

Very cool indeed. The "map these" command is a massive timesaver as well as the translation.

Wondering if anyone can answer me this. If I find a plugin for ubiquity and "subscribe" to it, will the plugin update itself as the author releases updates, like Firefox addons?

I just saw this technology on labs.mozilla.com and it looks pretty sweet :) Too many threads on UF talking about the package called Ubiquity :( I love it - I'll install it and check it out.

hi guys

how did you get ubiquity to work on ubuntu?

Edit: Oh..whoops, never-mind.

The link didn't work for me before, so i didn't realize it was a plug-in.

I couldnt get the "map-these" craigslist feature working in FF here in linux. Correct that.... It does work but only for looking for apartments. I was looking for furniture :)

It's essentially Launchy/Quicksilver/Gnome-Do for Firefox.

I think you mean "It's essentially Enso (http://humanized.com/enso/) for Firefox". :)

They really should make ubiquity independent of Firefox - it's annoying having to use gnome-do and then use a different keystroke to activate ubiquity.

Ubiquity is based on a product called Enso (http://www.humanized.com/enso), which does exactly what you want.

Are you going to release Enso for Mac and Linux? We are planning both a Mac version and a Linux version, but have not yet chosen a release date for either.
