So just recently, windows got corrupted on our family's main computer and I talked the rest of them into putting Ubuntu on instead. (The alternative is buying a whole new tower). However, it is hanging up whenever I try to use the CD to install or try it out. The message it won't go past is
Early unpacking initramfs...
Any ideas on this? I want to try and get this working by tomorrow night so we can restore some files from the "techies" that worked on it.
Using a 8.04.1 i386 disk onto a 3-4 year old hp tower.

How much RAM are you running? I had issues running a LiveCD on a laptop that only had 256MB.

512MB. I don't think that's the problem.

Burn a new CD. Do md5sum on the iso, burn at 4x or less. Do no use CD-RW, check Cd integrity before install.
Download and install ImgBurn:

Go to Mode>ISO>Burn, choose speed of 1x

I always use a checksum, so I don't think that's the issue. But you know, I'm think this is a hardware problem. Considering that the box just died and won't power on... yeah. It flashes the power light at me and lets out this long beep - kind of like when someone goes into cardiac arrest.

Time to go computer shopping!

You probably just need a new Power Supply.
